Anything with Joe Pesci in it is going to be good. I've watched this movies repeatedly. Lots of violence and sexual content. It wears you out. Other than that, it is an interesting look at a bygone era in Las Vegas. Just pay attention to the audience rating, as it is not for children.

Spilotro and younger brother Michael were murdered in Their bodies were uncovered from an Indiana cornfield. Less than a decade later, Nicholas Pileggi captured the Las Vegas mob zeitgeist in his nonfiction bestseller Casino , which became a star-studded blockbuster that entertained the masses and helped slap a coda on the mob era on the clean-shaven and corporate Las Vegas as the new century approached. These days Cullotta faces a dilemma almost as great as getting a death sentence from his old pal Tony: In a way, he went back to his roots and what he knows best: Although no jury ever convicted him of homicide, during his violent reign in Las Vegas, Spilotro is said to have been good for nearly two dozen murders.

Cullotta is an admitted killer whose dirty work was depicted in Casino. It seems like nobody wants me to be legit. Cullotta, 75, gets assistance from his literary sidekick Griffin and from businessman Robert Allen, who has had to negotiate with state authorities to get the tours approved. Well, maybe it's your infamy and the fact that companies like that were being investigated by the federal government in I don't have the answer to that question.

I don't know what the interests might be or why they would be interested in bodog or any off-shore property. Alleged ties to organized crime, it has been said.

I know the owner of bodog. I know the people who work there. In fact I had dinner with him a little over a year ago in Boca Raton. And he has no association in organized crime. You can trust me on that. You know what's strange? Are you smarter than everyone else or just luckier? The latter, the latter.

Throughout the s you ruled Las Vegas, and everyone respects that. Before we start getting into the Vegas years, let's talk about growing up in Chicago. What drew you to become a professional gambler? My father was in the horse-racing business. He owned thoroughbreds when I was in high school. That was my first attraction.

And sports in general became my first love. And not just focused, but trying to find a way to beat the odds. Which was not easy. You don't gamble, you study. Do you think people who go to casinos are suckers? No, I don't consider them suckers. Anyone who says he can is a liar. No, not on the straight. You could cheat, sure. But you can't go up against those odds on a crap table or roulette.

You can get lucky, but not on a regular basis. There are no exact statistics, but as an educated guess less than one percent of the public would be eligible to win. Much less than half a percent can make a living from this game. You left Chicago to come to Miami in the s. But then you were run out of Miami because you were running a bookmaking operation.

Why didn't you pay off the cops to stay in business? No, I wasn't bookmaking. When I moved to Miami from Chicago I bought some yearlings and some thoroughbreds. I was gambling, handicapping, but not booking. But from what I've read I always understood you were the biggest bookmaker in Miami, and you were chased out of town because you wouldn't pay off the Miami cops.

No, I was high profile from my gambling days in Chicago. The fact is I was doing two things: And neither is a crime. They are both legit. But there were politicians and cops who felt otherwise and tried to shake me down. But there are true-crime books, documentaries, and reams of federal documents that say you were a bookmaker and had ties with organized crime all of your life.

What do you say to that? They are all wrong. In fact, recently released federal documents say that in the s you were associated with a CIA-connected, Cuban-American anti-Castro militant named Luis Posada Carriles.

He's the guy wanted by Venezuelan authorities for the bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people. And he is wanted by Cuban authorities for a string of bombings in Havana that killed an Italian tourist and injured six people in The feds claim that back in the mids you forced Carriles to give you hand grenades, silencers, detonators and fuses that you in turn passed to the Chicago mob.

And I have no idea what you're talking about. Is this all fiction? I'm not going to go into it. Again, I said I am not going to go into it. Let me correct myself. I knew Frank very well. Dangerous would not be the right word.

Frank was a rough character. He wasn't the kind of guy you'd want to mess with. He could handle himself quite well.

My experience with him? We were very friendly. I don't know how I met him. It might have been through Tony [Spilotro] at the time. We became friends and stayed friends while I was in Chicago. Good guy as far as I was concerned. We had no professional relationship. He was a good handball player. Were you surprised that they were the only ones who managed to escape the FBI when the feds cracked down on the Chicago mob last year?

I didn't know they escaped. Rumors are that they may be hiding in the Caribbean. Schweihs was arrested in Kentucky in December , several weeks after this interview. They are both smart. And smart people don't allow themselves to get caught. Any colorful tales about Schweihs and Lombardo?

So I tried playing him with a racquet. I tried and I lost. I think it was called the Meat Block. Frank had a good sense of humor, but that was the extent of the relationship. Was Schweihs close to Tony Spilotro? I don't know if he was. Close enough that federal law enforcement believes that in Schweihs was one of the Chicago mobsters that killed Spilotro and his brother Michael, beating them to death and then burying them in a cornfield.

I don't know about that. Our relationship was strictly social. He also allegedly murdered Allen Dorfman, who ran the Teamsters Union pension fund, the same Dorfman who bankrolled the four casinos that you ran in the s. You dealt with underworld characters, killers, mobsters, but you never became a part of it. You were a Jewish man among Italian mobsters. Did your heritage protect you from being a made man? Some people were impressed and took special notice that I could beat the odds.

To have recognition, in my judgment, opened certain doors for me. It put me in a semi-celebrity category. But in order to move ahead you had to deal with the mob mainly because, during your era, they were involved in all aspects of the gaming industry. Well, I was never a part of them, but I made it a point not to burn any bridges. I don't see any purpose in burning a bridge. If you keep your distance, you keep your independence.

Provide them with the service that attracts them to you. In specific areas I did have an aptitude at a high level when it came to the mathematics of accurately determining the probable outcome of sporting events.

That is an attraction and it snowballed. Yeah, when I left Chicago at the age of 31 and moved to the Miami area I had a very high profile. Most of it not because of who I knew, but gambling, gambling, gambling. The same applied when I went to Las Vegas.

You take the word gambling and you combine it with the word Chicago there is a perception that you might be something that you're really not. So why did writer Nicholas Pileggi, a highly respected crime author, put that in the book? Nick is a good guy. I can't recall ever reading that in the book. Look, here it is on page of the hardcover edition. It's possible that he doesn't have all of the facts.

Allan Glick was trying to get an additional loan from the Teamsters, but that is my recollection of what happened in Kansas City, not what you described. Since we have the book out, what about page , where you told Glick: Never happened, for sure. When Glick testified under immunity in the Stardust skimming operation, he said a lot of things.

All I can say is that I don't know any of the arrangements he had. Did you know about the skimming operation at the Stardust?

Sam himself is almost killed by a car bomb, and suspects Nicky was behind it. Before Sam can take revenge, Nicky and his brother Dominick are ambushed by Frankie and their own crew, beaten and buried alive in a cornfield, the bosses having had enough of Nicky's behavior and suspecting his role in Sam's car bombing. With the Mob now out of power, the old casinos are purchased by big corporations and demolished.

The corporations build new and gaudier attractions, which Sam laments are not the same as when the Mafia was in control. Sam subsequently retires to San Diego and continues to live as a sports handicapper for the Mob, in his own words, ending up "right back where I started".

The research for Casino began when screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi read a report from the Las Vegas Sun about a domestic argument between Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, a casino figure, and his wife Geri McGee, a former topless dancer. Argent was owned by Allen Glick, but the casino was believed to be controlled by various organized crime families from the Midwest. This skimming operation, when uncovered by the FBI, was the largest ever exposed.

Pileggi contacted Scorsese about taking the lead of the project, which became known as Casino. Scorsese and Pileggi collaborated on the script for five months, towards the end of Some characters were combined, and parts of the story were set in Kansas City instead of Chicago.

A problem emerged when they were forced to refer to Chicago as "back home" and use the words "adapted from a true story" instead of "based on a true story. The scene was too detailed, so they changed the sequence to show the explosion of Sam's car and him flying into the air before hovering over the flames in slow motion—like a soul about to go straight down to hell.

Filming took place at night in the Riviera casino in Las Vegas, with the nearby defunct Landmark Hotel as the entrance, to replicate the fictional Tangiers. According to the producer Barbara De Fina , there was no point in building a set if the cost were the same to use a real-life one. Several edits were made in order to reduce the rating to R. Upon its release, the film was heavily criticized for its intense violence. It received mostly positive reviews from critics; however, their praise was more muted than it had been for the thematically similar Goodfellas , released only five years earlier, with some reviews criticizing Scorsese for retreading familiar territory.

The site's critical consensus reads, "Impressive ambition and bravura performances from an outstanding cast help ' Casino pay off in spite of a familiar narrative that may strike some viewers as a safe bet for director Martin Scorsese" [14] On Metacritic , the film has a weighted average score of 73 out of , based on 17 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

Frank and his wife Geri during happier times. According to Frank, the real story is that he filed for the divorce and for full custody of their children.

Burial site in an Enos, Indiana cornfield where the Spilotro brothers were found. Yes, the real life Spilotro brothers were beaten to death but not in a cornfield as portrayed in the movie. According to Nicholas Calabrese, a former mob hitman that testified in the Operation Family Secrets trial, the brothers were told they were being promoted in the mob.

They were driven to a mob home in Bensenville, Illinois and were beaten to death in the basement. They were later transported to the cornfield in Enos, Indiana. Is the real Sam still alive?
